Chiropractic Treatment for Text Neck
Our downtown Seattle chiropractic office has never been busier and I can pinpoint this to the long hours my patients (many of whom work for Amazon, Google, Microsoft, or another tech company) spend on their cell phones and laptops.
Text neck, or cervical kyphosis, is a painful condition caused by slouching, especially when looking at cellphone, or computer screen. Unfortunately, most people hunch their shoulders and hold their neck forward when they look at their phone, rather than lifting the phone up to meet their eyes and this leads to “forward head posture,” or holding your head forward of your neck, instead of directly over your neck. Forward head posture or “text neck, ” puts undue stress on a person’s neck and shoulders.
An average head weighs approximately 10 pounds. When you practice good posture and keep your head, neck shoulders and hips stacked on top of each other in a straight line, your neck can easily manage this weight. When you bend or extend your neck forward of your shoulders, the stress on your cervical spine (neck) increases; in fact, the stress on your neck doubles with every inch your head tilts down. An additional 30-50 pounds of stress multiplied by three to eight hours a day spent staring at a screen can cause severe damage, over time.
Symptoms of text neck include chronic, nagging pain in the neck and shoulders, persistent headaches, and upper back pain. Tightness and reduced range of motion in the neck, shoulders, and upper back, or excessive curvature of the spine in the upper back are also common complaints.
Treating text neck, typically involves a three- pronged approach:
Chiropractic adjustments to realign the vertebrae, ligaments, and tendons in the neck, and position the neck in the best position to recover. We will examine the curvature of your neck and take X-rays to pinpoint any imbalances that need treatment, including signs of compressed cervical discs, pinched nerves, or facet joint problems. chiropractic adjustments can release compressed nerves, easing any arm or hand symptoms.
Exercises and stretches to increase the neck’s strength and flexibility.
Improved postural habits when using smartphones and other devices.
We also recommend optimizing your office ergonomics, so that your screen is at eye level and raising your cell phone to eye level to prevent symptoms from coming back in the future. Lifestyle changes can make all the difference in preventing future struggles with text neck.
